NAIITS Journals

“[We] will be well satisfied if people tell [us] that they are convinced or still remain skeptical about what [is said], because at least they have tested the arguments against the Scriptures and their own experience of life.”
Andrew Kirk. Good News of the Kingdom Coming. Downers Grove, Intervarsity Press. 1983

NAIITS Volume 1

In this inaugural volume of the journal of NAIITS, we explore the continuing and often frustrating conversations around culture and faith that arose again in the latter 15 years or so of the twentieth century. Our focus is on a re-visitation of the linkages between culture and Christian faith.

This issue of the journal points up the fact that while much has been accomplished, much remains to be done to position Native North American Christians where they ought to be within the wider church and within missions.

A reprint of articles and presentations from the first five symposia this volume is also a reflection of a journey of theological discovery – one that predates the very first symposium by perhaps a century or more, capturing much that is represented in the evolving vision of the World Christian Gathering of Indigenous Peoples.

*Dedicated to Monte Ohia and his gift of letting all of us feel as if we owned the vision they gave life to, made possible through us, great endeavours for God.

It’s interesting how an examination of Indigenous Church can lead to so many different perspectives. In this volume we explore just a few of those diverse viewpoints through such ideas as the Sine’s exploration of the “Shadow of the Global Mall” and Adrian Jacobs’ Church of the Sacred Clowns – a Hopi construct in ecclesial metaphor.

According to our editor, Wendy Peterson, this is our best volume ever! We won’t argue. In this volume we have, perhaps, hit our stride. In this issue, we examine some ways of understanding that emerge from interaction with a different perspective–and, of course, different foundational thinking. Ontology has a lot to do with our approach to life and the rest of creation; that is to say whether we understand spiritual reality in strictly behavioural and human-centred terms or, as more creation-wide and ontological.

“The way we know is fateful.” In making this simple statement, Kenneth Gergen suggests that ways of knowing are about more than trite difference in life-ways and perspective. They do, in fact, shape our lives in a significant manner – in ways we are often not consciously aware of and, many times, unable even to clearly articulate. This is certainly true of the physical reality we experience around us; it is equally – perhaps especially – true of our understanding of the spiritual, our perspective of its reality.
